In its latest move to curb illegal dumping, Merced County is providing a curbside bulky waste disposal program for residents of unincorporated areas. The new program began July 1.

Residents can get rid of larger items by booking appointments with Waste Management. Each residence is allowed two bulky pickups per year.

According to Waste Management, pickups are collected on regular service days and items must be placed curbside by 6 a.m. The maximum size for items is 6 feet by 6 feet by 6 feet.

Among the items eligible for pickup:

  • Furniture
  • Appliances
  • Mattresses (up to two)
  • Tires (up to two)
  • E-waste
  • Trash/green waste (up to six 30-gallon bags)

Items not eligible are:

  • Carpet
  • Dirt and rocks
  • Bags weighing over 50 pounds or single items exceeding 200 pounds
  • Engines, engine parts or car batteries
  • Hazardous, medical or infectious waste
  • Liquids

To schedule pickup, residents can call 800-369-4999 or use the Waste Management app.

For residents in incorporated areas, Merced County has Community Cleanup events that allow residents to dispose of tires, appliances and other items for a reduced fee.

The county also has a bulky item drop-off site located at the corner of North Highway 59 and Yosemite Ave.
