Los Banos shelter-in-place lifted after chemical leak, police say
Emergency crews responded to a chemical leak in Los Banos on Monday morning.
Los Banos police and fire departments issued a shelter-in-place order for residents of the neighborhood near the leak, located in the 300 block of Johnson Road, according to a Los Banos Police Department Facebook post.
The order was lifted after the chemical leak was identified as ammonia.
The leak happened at Kagome Inc., a food production company.
“Based on current assessments and air monitoring, the smell many residents are noticing is not life-threatening,” a Los Banos Police Department update said. “There is no immediate danger to the general public.”
Schools are open as usual, but police asked that outdoor activities remain limited until the ammonia odor dissipates.
