Merced man arrested for possession of illegal fireworks, police say
Officers responding to a report of illegal fireworks caught a Merced man with the goods in his car early Thursday morning, police said.
Police responded to the report of illegal fireworks being set off in the area of South N Street near Amanda Court. While on foot, an officer saw 22-year-old Jose Gomez drop off two people in the area and they set off two mortar fireworks.
The two people ran off after seeing a police vehicle.
The officer contacted Gomez, who had illegal mortar-style fireworks in the back seat of his vehicle. Gomez was arrested for being in possession of illegal fireworks. The fireworks were confiscated and Gomez was cited and released.
