Suspect shot fleeing the scene of attempted carjacking has died, Los Banos police say
A carjacking suspect shot fleeing the scene of his crime in Los Banos has died, according to Los Banos police.
James Dallas Flemante, 22, of Los Banos, died at a Modesto area hospital Thursday morning.
Police said Flemante was involved in an attempted carjacking incident early Wednesday. Officers arrived at a gas station on the 100 block of West Pacheco Boulevard at 12:30 a.m. and observed two men standing near a Jeep before one of the men ran away from the scene toward the intersection of West Pacheco Boulevard and California Avenue. According to police, the man ran down California Avenue and out of view of the officers.
Officers then heard gun shots coming from the 1200 block of California Avenue.
As officers locked down the scene, they located Flemante with gunshot wounds hiding outside a nearby home. Flemante had allegedly assaulted the owner of the Jeep in an attempted carjacking. Police said the Jeep owner fought back against the man and the altercation ended prior to officers arriving on scene.
The shooting was believed to be unrelated to the carjacking incident, according to police.
