Police catch one teen, seek another after a man is beaten and shot at outside Merced store

Police have arrested a teenager and are looking for a second one after a report of a shooting and assault outside of a Merced convenience store, authorities said.

About 9 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to 3250 G St. for a report of shots fired, according to Lt. Emily Foster. Police also received a report of a dark-colored Dodge Charger leaving the scene going north on G Street.

Officers located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop near G Street and El Portal Drive, according to Foster. Police said one of the suspects, believed to be a 17-year-old boy, ran from the vehicle and was not apprehended.

The 16-year-old male driver was found to be in possession of a firearm, officers said.

Foster said that due to witness reports of two shooters, the outstanding suspect is believed to have had a firearm. The driver was arrested, booked and accused of possession of a firearm. Two other juvenile passengers were not arrested.

Police said the suspects assaulted a 21-year-old man with a firearm and fists prior to shooting at him. The victim was not struck by the gunfire and got himself to the hospital with minor injuries.

Foster said it appears there may have been some kind of disturbance in the parking lot prior to the assault; it is unclear if the suspects and victim know each other. Officers found shell casings and other evidence consistent with a shooting in the lot.

The incident remains under investigation as police look for the other teenager. Anyone with information is asked to contact Sgt. Jeremy Salyers at 209-388-7771.
