Police looking for suspects after a man was reportedly chased and stabbed in Merced

Merced police are investigating after a man was stabbed multiple times early Sunday.

Officers responded about 1:36 a.m. to the 1700 block of Canal Street for a reported stabbing. Arriving officers located a 26-year-old man unresponsive on the sidewalk with stab wounds, including one to the face, according to Lt. Emily Foster.

According to police, the man and another person were reportedly walking down the street when they began to be chased by multiple people. Foster said the witness described the people chasing them as gang members. The witness was not injured, according to police.

Foster said the man was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Merced with what were believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. His condition was unknown.

Police said they believe three people were involved; a motive for the attack as well as what type of weapon was used were unknown at this time.
