For the second time in less than a week, officers from the Merced Police Department are investigating a shooting that happened in the southwest part of town.

The first shooting happened last Wednesday in the area of R Street and Childs Avenue.

The second shooting happened Monday night just a few blocks away, on the 600 block of R Street, according to Merced police Lt. Jose Barajas.

At around 8 p.m. Monday, officers were called to the scene of shots fired. When they arrived, they found a man around age 30 suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Police conducted life-saving measures, including applying a tourniquet. The man was transported to a hospital and is expected to survive, Barajas said.

Barajas said officers canvassed the area and the investigation into the shooting continues. Multiple people were believed to be involved in the shooting.

According to witnesses, a group of people approached the alleged victim while he was standing in front of his residence and opened fire.

Several rounds struck the residence. The occupants of the residence, including women and children, were uninjured.

Barajas said that while it’s too soon to determine, there is a high likelihood that the shooting was gang-related.

Merced has seen eight homicides so far this year. That’s typically the number for an entire year, Barajas said.
