Cesar E. Chavez Middle School in Planada is getting a new name
Cesar E. Chavez Middle School in Planada will get a new name, Planada Elementary School District Superintendent José L. González announced Thursday.
In March, two days after a New York Times article revealed serious allegations against Chavez, including sexual abuse of minors and rape, González said discussions about changing the name of the Merced County middle school would take place.
After those discussions — along with a public survey that received nearly 500 responses and 200 written comments — the school district’s Board of Trustees made a unanimous decision to proceed with the name change, González said in a Facebook post.
According to the post, 62% of the respondents voted to change the name of the school.
The school district said it will now establish a city advisory committee and establish parameters on the renaming process. After taking suggestions on a new name, the Board of Trustees will vote to finalize the name, the post said.
“We remain committed to transparency, respect, and collaboration throughout this process,” González said in the post, “and we thank you for your ongoing support and involvement in our District.”
