The Planada Elementary School District is looking for people to serve on a school renaming advisory committee in its latest step to rename Cesar E. Chavez Middle School.

The school district announced in April it would change the name of the school. Efforts to rename the school were prompted by a New York Times investigation that accused Chavez of sexually abusing children and raping his United Farm Workers co-founder and civil rights icon, Dolores Huerta.

The seven-member advisory committee will “play an important role in gathering community input, reviewing potential school names, and making recommendations to the Board of Trustees regarding the future name of Cesar E. Chavez Middle School,” the school district said in a Facebook post.

Committee responsibilities will likely include:

  • Participating in scheduled committee meetings
  • Reviewing community feedback and naming suggestions
  • Engaging with stakeholder groups as appropriate
  • Assisting in the development of recommendations for Board consideration

Those interested in being on the committee can apply here. The deadline to apply is June 24 and selections will be made by June 26, the post said.

For questions regarding the committee, contact Superintendent, José L. González at jgonzalez@planada.org or (209)382-0756.
