UC Merced sprinter earns another CCAA honor. What he did this time to earn it
UC Merced sprinter Martel Fields continues to make history this track and field season.
Fields, a junior out of Long Beach, has been named the Central California Athletic Association Men’s Track Athlete of the Week for the third time this season.
Fields’ latest honor comes after winning the 200 meters at the prestigious Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific University on Saturday. His time was 21.08 seconds, better than 72 other competitors.
The Bryan Clay Invitational is known as the fastest and largest collegiate meet in the country, according to a UC Merced Athletics news release.
On Friday, Fields broke his own 100 meters school record with a time of 10.40 to finish in ninth.
Fields also anchored the Bobcats’ 4x100 relay team with Naseem Hassaan, Medard Idi and Nyj Joiner to a time of 41.66 seconds.
This is the first season that UC Merced has competed in the CCAA and at the Division II level. Fields graduated from Long Beach Polytechnic High School before coming to UC Merced.
UC Merced will next compete in the Central California Athletic Association championships April 30-May 2 at Cal State San Marcos.
