Merced could see record temperatures this week. Here’s what to know
It is still technically winter, but Merced residents will beg to differ after seeing this week’s forecast.
And the first day of spring will be a doozy.
The National Weather Service is predicting record temperatures this week, with highs in the 90s from Tuesday until Saturday, including a high of 93 degrees on Friday, the first day of spring.
Any 90-degree day this week would mark the earliest one in Merced history, according to extremeweather.com.
The earliest in the year that Merced had a high temperature of at least 90 degrees is April 5, which happened in 1952, the website said.
Residents should make sure seniors, children and pets are well monitored, experts say.
Much of Northern California is under a heat warning this week.
Ways to stay safe in the heat according to the NWS
- Stay hydrated: Remember to drink plenty of fluids.
- Find cool shelter: Stay in an air-conditioned room.
- Avoid direct sun exposure: Protect yourself and check on vulnerable relatives and neighbors.
- Child and pet safety: Never leave young children and pets unattended in hot vehicles — car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
- Be cautious outdoors: Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside.
- Time your activities wisely: If possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening when the heat is less intense.
- Recognize early indicators: Learn to identify the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
- Stay cool with clothing: Select lightweight and loose-fitting outfits for enhanced comfort.
