Merced County is expected to see triple-digit heat this week. What to know
Summer doesn’t officially start until June 21, but the Central Valley’s scorching temperatures are already here.
The National Weather Service says Merced County will see triple-digit high temperatures starting Thursday and potentially lasting through Sunday.
NWS calls for sunny and hot conditions Thursday and Friday, with a high temperature of 100 degrees expected each day.
Weather.com‘s forecast says Merced could see a high of 104 on Friday and Saturday. High temperatures are expected in the high to low 90s until June 22, Weather.com says.
The Merced County Office of Emergency Services issued a warning to residents on Facebook last week to prepare for hot weather.
“As temperatures begin to rise, please remember that everyone responds to heat differently,” the post says. “Be aware of those who may be at greater risk for heat-related illnesses, including older adults, young children, individuals with chronic health conditions, and those who work or spend extended periods outdoors.”
Merced County opened its cooling zones — primarly branch libraries — on June 1 to help residents escape the extreme heat. Cooling zones provide air-conditioned indoor spaces, free bottled water, and places to sit.
Here are some hot-weather tips from the Merced County Office of Emergency Services:
- Limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
- Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
- Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing when outdoors.
- Seek air-conditioned or adequately cooled locations whenever possible.
