Merced County escaped severe weather for Fourth. What’s in store the coming week?

weather update

While Independence Day revelers in several areas of the nation suffered severe heat and other extreme weather, the Central Valley escaped harsh conditions.

Merced County’s high was in the mid 90s on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service’s forecast.

That’s bearable by Central Valley standards for July, where triple digits might be expected.

A steady forecast in the low to the upper 90s remains for Merced County throughout the upcoming week, with a high near triple digits expected by the weekend.

Here’s a look at the daily weather service predictions:

  • Sunday, July 5: Mostly sunny with a high around 91 degrees and a low around 62 degrees
  • Monday, July 6: Sunny with a high near 93, low of 62
  • Tuesday, July 7: Same as Monday, sunny with a high near 93, low of 61
  • Wednesday, July 8: Sunny with a high of 95, low of 63
  • Thursday, July 9: Hotter with a high of 99, low of 63
  • Friday, July 10: High near 100, low of 65

How to beat the heat in Merced County

Merced County opened its cooling zones — primarily branch libraries — on June 1 to help residents escape the extreme heat. Cooling zones provide air-conditioned indoor spaces, free bottled water, and places to sit.

Here are some hot-weather tips from the Merced County Office of Emergency Services:

  • Limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
  • Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing when outdoors.
  • Seek air-conditioned or adequately cooled locations whenever possible.
