Midwest Regional’s most outstanding player is a Kansas Jayhawk who comes off the bench
In four seasons at Arizona State, Remy Martin played in three NCAA Tournament games and won one.
In his one season at Kansas, he’s the most outstanding player of the Midwest Regional.
Martin won the honor in a vote of reporters covering the tournament after the Jayhawks roared past Miami (Florida) 76-50 to advance to the Final Four.
The award and all-tournament team covers the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight games played in Chicago. Sunday, Martin finished with nine points, six rebounds and two assists.
In Friday’s semifinal victory over Providence, Martin was a bigger force with 23 points, seven rebounds and three assists. With that output, Martin improved his scoring total over seven straight games.
Martin was joined on the all-regional team by teammates David McCormack and Christian Braun, Miami’s Kameron McGusty and Providence’s Al Durham.
Martin has started for KU since suffering a bone bruise on his right knee in late December. Coach Bill Self gets him in the game early, usually around the first media timeout. Martin has averaged about 25 minutes per game in the postseason, including the Big 12 Tournament.
Martin, who needs four points for 2,000 in his career, said after the game that the job isn’t finished. He told the KU Radio Network, “I didn’t come to Kansas to get to the FInal Four. I came to win a national title.”
