NASCAR driver Ryan Newman has been released from the hospital after Daytona 500 crash
NASCAR driver Ryan Newman has been treated and released from Halifax Medical Center, according to a statement released by Roush Fenway Racing on Wednesday afternoon.
The team also posted a photo on Twitter of Newman walking out of the hospital hand-in-hand with his two daughters, Brooklyn and Ashlyn, appearing unscathed given the severity of the crash he endured in the final lap of the Daytona 500 on Monday.
Earlier Wednesday, the team posted an update that said Newman was fully alert, walking around and joking with his family and hospital staff.
“Ryan Newman continues to show great improvement after Monday night’s last-lap accident at Daytona International Speedway,” the statement said. “The veteran driver is fully alert and walking around Halifax Medical Center. True to his jovial nature, he has also been joking around with staff, friends and family while spending time playing with his two daughters.”
Roush Fenway Racing posted a picture on Twitter of Newman in his hospital gown standing and smiling with his daughters shortly before announcing his release.
Newman, 42, was removed from his No. 6 Ford Mustang and immediately taken to the hospital after his car went airborne on the last lap of the race, then skidded to a stop while on fire. His car was also hit by Corey LaJoie on the driver’s side. The crash left Newman in serious condition on Monday evening.
The extent of his injuries has not yet been announced.
