Firefighters are battling a fire that had burned 191 acres of vegetation in Mariposa County, according to Cal Fire’s Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit.

Crews were dispatched to the Cornetts Fire, which is the area of Cornetts Road and Old Highway South, at 10:55 a.m. Saturday.

As of 8:30 a.m. Monday the blaze was 95% contained, according to the Cal Fire website.

“It’s very difficult access to the fire,” Ciapponi said. “We’re dealing with steep terrain and the road system is tough so it’s hard to get around. We’re hopping around from place to place trying to secure the edges.”

According to Ciapponi, there are four engines, two hand crews, two bulldozers and three or four other support staff on site.

“Forward progress is stopped and right now we are controlling the line around to secure it,” Ciapponi said. “We’ll be mopping around the edges to make sure no embers hop over the line.”

The cause of the fire is unknown.
