Merced’s Applegate Zoo renovations not done yet. Here’s when it’ll reopen
Merced residents will have to wait a little longer to see the changes made at Applegate Zoo.
The zoo has been closed since Jan. 1 for major renovations. It was scheduled to reopen Thursday, but that has been delayed, according to the Merced Parks and Recreation Department.
According to an update on the department’s Facebook page posted Friday, the park will now reopen sometime in May.
In January, the zoo said it was building a new black bear exhibit, improving walking paths and updating the entry to the gift shop.
“Gratefully, we have had the opportunity to expand the amount of work being carried out at MAZ to include additional exhibits beyond the new American Black Bear Exhibit,” Friday’s update said.
The post said the zoo hopes to reopen before students begin summer break.
Applegate Zoo was established in 1962. Its population is about 75 native California mammals, birds and reptiles. Most of them come from wildlife rescue centers, according to the city of Merced.
The zoo is at 1045 W. 25th St.
