Teenager leads police on high-speed pursuit before crashing into fence in Merced

A 17-year-old crashed a truck into a fence after trying to evade officers during a high-speed pursuit on Thursday night in Merced, police said.

Officers attempted to make a traffic stop on the truck at 11th and R street at 7:25 p.m., but the teenager refused to stop, starting a chase that reached speeds exceeding 80 mph. The driver ran a stop sign at Q Street where he crashed into the fence.

The driver was taken into custody on suspicion of felony evading, open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle and driving without a license and was released to the custody of his parents. A juvenile passenger was cited for having an open container of alcohol in a vehicle and released to his parents.

A third person in the truck, Nestor Bremes, 22, was cited for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Merced police are asking anyone with information regarding the crime to contact Officer Chavez at 209-388-7713 or by email at chaveze@cityofmerced.org.
