Merced spent most of Friday night playing from behind against Turlock, and ultimately never caught up as the Bulldogs held off the Bears 59-57 at Clemons Court in a game that ended with a controversial no-call at the buzzer by the referees.
Merced High’s Jabar Byrd and Buhach Colony’s Aundre Sherman grew up playing youth football together. Soon they will be playing college football together after they both verbally committed to accept scholarships to Humboldt State.

Kyle Anaya drilled a 3-pointer with 1 minute, 14 seconds left in the game to give Atwater a lead and the Falcons went on to score the final eight points of the game to defeat Golden Valley 60-53 on Friday night at the Nest. The win snapped a streak of 28 consecutive losses to the Cougars dating back to 2003.
Thursday’s game against Atwater could have been played with helmets and pads. Bodies crashed into each other all night before Golden Valley emerged with a 41-32 win at Cougar Arena that snapped the Falcons’ 11 game winning streak.
With his team trailing by five points, the only way Tanner Browning could deliver a win for Golden Valley was with a pin in the final match. The Cougars senior delivered, pinning David Ortiz in the third round to lift Golden Valley to a 34-33 win over Buhach Colony
The Golden Valley girls basketball squad used a mind-clearing session during intermission to rally past Buhach Colony and grab at least a share of the Central California Conference crown with a 50-41 victory.
Greg Hostetler donated 8.33 acres of land near Merced College to the Merced High Quarterback Club. The plan is to sell the land and use the money for building the football stadium. The land is currently for sale at $2.1 million.
