After two years as a role player, McNeill has become Mr. Everything for the Cougars this year and he showed why on Friday night, scoring 17 of his 26 points after the third quarter to lift Golden Valley to a thrilling 64-60 win over Merced in double overtime at Cougar Arena.
Merced knocked down nine 3-pointers, including two big ones in the fourth quarter by Jared Pazin and Brandon Blackwell, as the Bears held on to defeat the Falcons 60-56 on Wednesday night at Clemons Court.
The Bears defense showed up, forcing Atwater into 35 turnovers as Merced pulled away in the second half for a 65-44 win to set the stage for a Central California Conference showdown on Thursday at Clemons Court against Golden Valley.
Kyle Anaya drilled a 3-pointer with 1 minute, 14 seconds left in the game to give Atwater a lead and the Falcons went on to score the final eight points of the game to defeat Golden Valley 60-53 on Friday night at the Nest. The win snapped a streak of 28 consecutive losses to the Cougars dating back to 2003.
Thursday’s game against Atwater could have been played with helmets and pads. Bodies crashed into each other all night before Golden Valley emerged with a 41-32 win at Cougar Arena that snapped the Falcons’ 11 game winning streak.
With his team trailing by five points, the only way Tanner Browning could deliver a win for Golden Valley was with a pin in the final match. The Cougars senior delivered, pinning David Ortiz in the third round to lift Golden Valley to a 34-33 win over Buhach Colony
Greg Hostetler donated 8.33 acres of land near Merced College to the Merced High Quarterback Club. The plan is to sell the land and use the money for building the football stadium. The land is currently for sale at $2.1 million.
